Local school children get a lesson in health and safety from leading homebuilder
Pupils at Abbas and Templecombe CE Primary School have been learning an important lesson in construction health and safety, as well as all about the property and construction sector, after a visit from national homebuilder, Tilia Homes Western.
The sessions, which are run across the region, serve as a way of teaching children about how homes are built safely, while opening their minds to a possible future career in construction and engineering.
The engaging presentation was delivered by Richard Perry, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for Tilia Homes Western.
Packed with interesting building statistics and question time, the session taught the children the different hazards on site, to safety signs and protective clothing. They also learned about the important role maths, English and science played in the managers’ day-to-day roles.
Richard Perry commented: “The children at Abbas and Templecombe CE Primary School were a pleasure to talk to. They were all very engaged and now understand the importance of health and safety on a construction site.
“If we’re able to inspire the next generation of carpenters, welders, plumbers and brick layers by sharing experiences and passion for our industry, then all the better. We look forward to welcoming the children to site very soon so they can see for themselves how we take a piece of land and transform it into a home.”
Tilia Homes Western is currently building a collection of new homes, Knights Meadow, conveniently located adjacent to the school. This week’s assembly marks the start of an ongoing collaboration with the school while construction progresses.
As part of the housebuilder’s commitment to the local community, Abbas and Templecombe Primary CE School will benefit from a 0.5 hectare extension to enhance the existing playing fields. In addition, Tilia Homes Western has also pledged to contribute to the school’s Forest School shelter and invited some pupils for an exclusive welly-boot site visit to see the action first hand.
Knights Meadow will comprise of 70 three-, four- and five-bedroom homes, with a 35 per cent affordable homes and shared equity tenures to meet the demand for quality properties in Templecombe. Set in a leafy, tranquil setting, surrounded by a mature tree-lined borders and featuring a pond and green open space, the development has something for every buyer on the property ladder.
